Kruger, Coast & Cape

Day 2 - Johannesburg

After a long 10 hour flight, I touched down in Johannesburg and spent the first 45 mins queuing to get through customs.

My bag was already on the conveyor belt when I arrived so I quickly picked it up and raced through the arrivals hall hoping I hadn’t missed my taxi transfer who would wait “only 1 hour” after arrival of the plane. Luckily I found him and he took myself and two other people (a son and mother from Switzerland) to his car. The smallest contraption I have ever seen and we all exchanged glances wondering how on earth he was planning on fitting three massive bags into that boot. Somehow they fitted perfectly and we were off...... well, for two minutes until the parking barrier refused to open and we had to wait 20 minutes for a man to stumble upon us and help push the gate up, "Welcome to Africa!" he chuckled.

I got to the hotel about 11:00am and went straight up to the room where my new roomie (or tenty as I should probably call her) was already there. Nice 29 year old girl called Jo who lives in London. We went for a wander round the shopping mall next door, grabbed some food for lunch, went back to the room, had a natter and then a nap for a few hours. It was well needed, I hadn’t got any sleep on the plane and was struggling to keep my eyes open!

We met up with the rest of the group at 18:00. 12 of us in total with 1 driver (Mr Goodman) and our tour leader Tshepo. Interesting mix of people, me and Jo, another two girls roughly our age - 1 from Australia and 1 from Switzerland, a married couple who were cattle farmers in Australia, two cousins from Ireland, a lady from Norway, a man from Norway and a 65 year old lady from New Zealand who was on her 60th country and 5 month this year of travelling. Most well travelled people and all seem very nice. Should be a good group!
