Kruger, Coast & Cape

Day 10 - Durban

We were already awake thanks to those Roosters at the time our alarm went off at 6:45. We ate breakfast with Momma and the family of Maize Porridge, sausage, doughnuts and coffee and then headed off to Durban.

The drive took us about an hour and as we came closer we noticed much more civilisation and many many super large houses with massive high security gates on the outskirts of Durban. As we drove into the city it was clear that this was a very mixed city, many many homeless people and those with a lot of wealth. We had spent about the last 5 days being the only white people where ever we went, now we were in the majority.

I have to say that I don’t really have any strong feelings about Durban. It’s like any seaside city - dirty, rundown, full of homeless people but it had a nice waterfront parade which a group of us walked down for a while. We stopped to have brunch and sat and watched the world go by for a bit. 3 of the group were leaving the next morning - Jo, my Tenty and the 2 Irish guys, so it was nice to spend the afternoon with them before they left.

We could check in from 12 onwards so we were there at 12 on the dot to get into our rooms and have a shower, I’ve never been so desperate for a shower in all my life. We then changed and went upstairs to the Hostel's Rooftop Bar which was lovely. We sat up there for about 5 hours putting the world to rights until it was time to meet for dinner with the rest of the group and the newbies who had arrived that afternoon - A married couple from Oz, a girl called Delia from Switzerland and another girl called Kate from Manchester. We had a lovely evening with a lot of laughter and conversations and then went back to the Hostel for one more drink before bed. All in all, a very quiet and relaxing day which is exactly what was needed!
